It's uncharted territory for the most decorated prep sports team in San Pedro.

The 2013 edition of the San Pedro High softball team, owners of 16 CIF-Los Angeles City Section championships, has no player on their team with a championship ring after losing their last four ring bearers from the 2009 City title team: Koral Costa (Oregon), Chloe Oro (Delaware State), Victoria Garcia (El Camino College) and Taylor Garcia to graduation, while only boasting two seniors, which would easily hint to many that this is a rebuilding year.

Don't tell that to the Pirates or 27-year head coach Tony Dobra though.

Anyone would make a fatal mistake to take San Pedro lightly, as the Pirates still have some great players that's eager to make their own mark while challenging Carson and Banning of Wilmington for the Marine League championship.

Sophomore catcher Alexa Ponce and junior outfielder Doreen Corella are the two returning All-Marine League players on this year's team, and both are destined for breakout seasons. Senior first baseman Michelle Duarte is the lone four-year veteran who's more than capable of making teams pay. Sophomore INF/OF Taylor Ricther, who is also a pitcher, carries a mean stick, hitting two homers in a victory over Palisades last season.

Junior infielder Angelina Boskovich, junior utility player Michelle Corona and junior catcher Armida Salceda Roman are all three-year veterans on this team along with Corella, and sophomore infielder Johnie Cortez finally breaks into a starting spot at second base.

Junior pitcher Jaclyn Rivera picked her game up at the tail end of last year and is now the No.1 pitcher.

While San Pedro may not have a returning champion on this year's team, they do bring a slew of talent in from last year's junior varsity team that won the City Section title.

Sophomore outfielder Cayla Ezelle is one player destined for greatness, as she crushed a towering home run against Narbonne of Harbor City in a junior varsity game last year that blasted off the San Pedro scoreboard, leaving a dent.

Junior Jocelyn Kondash is another powerful hitter, as she will see time both at third base and pitcher. Junior outfielder Mattie Linares provides stability to the team, while junior INF/OF Amber Ruiz and senior outfielder Sylene Phayget round out the 2013 Pirates, who will sorely miss junior P/INF Katrina Herrera, who will miss the entire season due to a devastating ACL injury suffered over the summer.

San Pedro opens the season on Wednesday with a nonleague game at North Torrance.

San Pedro High Flag Football 2023 Shines In Inaugural Year

When a new high school sports program begins, normally it takes time to build a winner from the ground up.For San Pedro High flag football however, they didn't waste time in its inaugural season. Not wanting to settle for just being one of the 54 CIF-Los Angeles City Section schools to take in this brand-new environment, San Pedro immediately looked to hire a man well…See More
