The San Pedro High boys basketball team in five years, has never won their own Pirate Shootout Tournament.
On Thursday, they took that first step towards achieving that goal.
Six players scored in double figures for the host Pirates as they engineered a strong second half to defeat visiting South Tahoe, 80-59 in the first round of the sixth annual Pirate Shootout Tournament. Michael Loughry provided a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Khalil Dave added 16 points, 7 assists and 4 steals. James Fish had 12 points and seven rebounds, while Quincy Thomas, Zach Foster and Omar Monroe-Johnson all scored 10 points.
The Pirates (8-4 overall) led from wire-to-wire and led 38-27 at halftime.
Meanwhile, Mary Star and Port Of Los Angeles both lost their Pirate Shootout openers.
Elijah Davis scored 18 points and Neil Green added 16 for Mary Star (3-4) in their 55-46 loss to Rancho Dominguez Prep of Long Beach. Justin Rodriguez added 12 rebounds and four blocks. POLA lost 67-38 to South Torrance in their opener. Both games were played at the San Pedro High John M. & Muriel Olguin Campus. The Polar Bears (0-7) were paced by Josh Rodriguez's 12 points, and Dorian Garcia added nine.
San Pedro will host Long Beach Cabrillo today at 7 pm in a championship bracket quarterfinal. Mary Star faces Hawkins of Los Angeles, and POLA takes on Middle College in a pair of consolation quarterfinals.
