CARSON - On April 9, the San Pedro High boys volleyball came to Carson High, and the Colts swept the Pirates three straight in their first Marine League battle. On April 25, the Pirates returned the favor with a sweep of their own to gain a share of their second straight league crown at San Pedro High.
They would meet again on Thursday for higher stakes because this was a CIF-Los Angeles City Section Division I quarterfinal, and the Pirates were able to emerge victorious, 21-25, 25-18, 25-19, 21-25, 15-13. Senior middle blocker Sean Zuvich led the Pirates (24-7-1 overall) with 15 kills, 11 digs and six blocks, while senior setter Austin Freitas had 52 assists and 16 digs.
Senior outside hitter Kosta Tzavaras had a triple-double 16 digs, 12 blocks and 10 kills, while senior Kevin LoGrande added 12 digs for San Pedro, who advances to the semifinal round on Tuesday, May 14 at top-seeded Palisades.
