The crowd at San Pedro High held their collective breath, almost dead silent, as Christian Mills lined up to kick a field goal that would literally shake things up in the CIF-Los Angeles City Section playoff seeding meeting on Saturday.
Only 15 seconds remained, and after having missed a 38-yard field goal near the end of the third quarter, Carson coach Kevin McCall would burn a time out in attempt to freeze Mills, but in actuality, the senior got a little more time to compose himself for what was to come.
When it was all said in done, it would be Mills who would have the final say, as he, and the rest of the Pirates, would kick down the door to earn their share of the Marine League football championship.
Mills' 30-yard boot somehow trickled down the middle and sneaked over the crossbar with only ten ticks remaining, and Carson's last-ditch attempt to score on the ensuing kickoff even after a lateral would be denied, and it was the host Pirates who emerged victorious, 17-15 at Pirate Stadium on Friday. Also getting a share of the crown is Narbonne of Harbor City, whose 31-14 victory over Banning of Wilmington forces a three-way tie with the Pirates and Colts.
Neither defenses of San Pedro (9-1 overall, 4-1 league) or Carson (7-3, 4-1) was conceding anything, as the Pirates held a 7-6 lead going into the fourth quarter, where the lead eventually changed four times.
After a lengthy drive, Carson would go up 9-7 on a 30-yard field goal by sophomore kicker Aguistin Delgadillo with 7:04 remaining, but the Pirates would answer back on a five-yard touchdown run by senior running back Christian Serna with 4:38 to play, and that play came right after a facemask penalty on the Colts, who would then answer the bell one more time on senior quarterback Kiki Flores' 44-yard touchdown pass to senior wide receiver Jabari Minix.
Suddenly, Carson was up 15-14 with 3:26 to play, but Flores' two-point conversion pass was too high and out of bounds, then San Pedro recovered the shocking onside kick that followed. Another facemask penalty aided the Pirates, who methodically ran eight plays, and ran the clock down to 15 seconds before calling time out to set up Mills' moment of glory.
Carson scored first when senior running back Devonte King's six-yard touchdown put the Colts up, 6-0 with 6:45 remaining in the first quarter after both teams traded punts. San Pedro would grab their first lead of the night on senior running back Chris Alvidrez's three-yard touchdown run for a 7-6 lead with 7:22 left in the second quarter, set up by his own 17-yard run and a 40-yard pass from junior quarterback Jacob Miller to sophomore WR/DB Mikey Hernandez.
San Pedro's defense would preserve the lead, stopping Carson on downs, and getting a clutch interception by Hernandez with 44 seconds remaining in the first half. Minix had 144 yards receiving on nine receptions to lead Carson, who ended Narbonne's 14-game Marine League win streak the previous week.
Serna ran for 130 yards and a touchdown on 25 carries for San Pedro, while Alvidrez ran for 66 yards on 16 carries, tying Jeff Williams' school record with his 17th rushing touchdown this season.
Mills, however, ends up as the hero of the night.
