It was a long time coming for the San Pedro High girls basketball team.
FINALLY, a win over their Harbor Area neighbors.
Behind a stalwart defensive charge, the host Pirates were able to end a 10-game losing streak to Banning of Wilmington with an emphatic 44-23 Marine League victory. This was San Pedro's first win in the Harbor Area Feud since a 61-59 win at Banning during the 2007-2008 season.
Sophomore point guard Rita Fiorenza was on point, scoring a game-high 19 points to go along with 5 rebounds, 5 steals and 4 assists to power the Pirates (4-6 overall, 2-1 in league), who played their first game under new head coach Cynthia Atencio, who took over for former coach Gary Herrera, who stepped down after the first game this season due to health issues.
The game was never in doubt, as San Pedro held winless Banning (0-7, 0-2) without a point until 39.2 seconds remained in the second quarter. At that time, the Pirates had a commanding 27-0 lead after a Fiorenza three-point field goal.
Junior G/F Cheyenne Alvarez scored 7 points, and senior center Miranda Diehm chipped in with 6 points, 7 rebounds and two blocked shots for San Pedro, who will travel to face defending CIF-Los Angeles City Section Division I champion Narbonne of Harbor City on Friday for their next league contest.
