SPHS Girls Volleyball Emphatically Notches First Win Of 2014

Monday left a sour taste in the mouths of the San Pedro High girls volleyball team as they were outclassed in four sets by Elizabeth Learning Center of Cudahy in their 2014 season opener. That also left the Pirates with one course of action.

Take it out on the next team that dared face them.

And so it goes, the host Pirates stormed to a quick and large lead before University of Los Angeles hit them, and would steamroll their way to a 25-6, 25-13, 25-10 victory that was as devastating as it was dazzling for first-year coach Chris Ceballos.

Senior outside hitter Allie Kittell, who moved to the West Coast from Indiana, would serve six unanswered points for San Pedro (1-1 overall) to take a 7-0 lead early on in the first set, including a pair of service aces combined with three kills from junior middle blocker Tracy Folchi, San Pedro's other transfer 'twin tower' from North Torrance High. As the dynamic duo overpowered the Wildcats, senior outside hitter Paige Peterson's serves would overwhelm them.

Peterson served a trio of aces in succession during the first set, three more in the second set, and four aces during a seven-serve span during the third set that staked the Pirates to a 16-3 advantage before Ceballos emptied his bench as everyone healthy, got a chance to play in the match. Senior outside hitter Kirsten Bauman is currently out for a month with an ankle injury.

The play of Kittell (9 kills, 3 aces, 3 digs), Peterson (10 aces, 3 kills, 5 digs) and Folchi (6 kills, block) were vital but no moment was probably better than late in the final set when junior backup setter Brianna Corallo blasted a kill from the front-center net and was plum excited by the outcome, while her teammates loved it.

Sophomore starting setter Katie Bentovoja had 15 assists for the Pirates, who begin Marine League play on Monday against Banning of Wilmington at San Pedro High.
