After three consecutive Marine League losses, first time that's ever happened in a long time for the San Pedro High softball team, finally there was cause for celebration and time for something special again.

By virtue of their 17-0, five-inning victory over visiting Gardena, the Pirates were able to get the 700th career victory for longtime head coach Tony Dobra, who got this win in his 33rd year of coaching. Dobra, a San Pedro alumni, coached Mary Star Of The Sea from 1981 to 1986 and piled up 102 wins during that span. From there, he took the San Pedro job in 1987, and the Pirates' program would never be the same again.

Dobra would lead San Pedro to their first CIF-Los Angeles City Section championship under his tenure in his fifth season when the Pirates defeated Banning of Wilmington, 3-2 in fifteen innings for the 1992 championship, and in his 27 years coaching San Pedro, they have won an unprecedented 13 City championships (last one in 2009) and countless Marine League and Southern Pacific Conference championships. 

This win also put Dobra at 598 career wins as the Pirates' coach, and San Pedro (12-10 overall, 3-3 league) can add another milestone to his already hall of fame-worthy career by getting him 600 wins with two victories on Saturday in the El Segundo Tournament.

Sophomore second baseman Johnie Cortez went 3-for-3 with a double, 2 RBIs and two runs scored for San Pedro, while junior right fielder Amber Ruiz went 2-for-3 with a double and 3 RBIs, also sophomore catcher Alexa Ponce went 2-for-3 with two RBIs to power the Pirates. Pitchers Jocelyn Kondash and Taylor Richter combined to hurl a five-inning no-hitter, with Kondash (5-2) earning the win starting and pitching three perfect innings with four strikeouts.

San Pedro starts the El Segundo Tournament on Saturday against Rio Mesa of Oxnard at El Segundo Middle School.
