SPHS Softball Goes On Home Run Binge In Two Short Wins

MONTEBELLO - The San Pedro High softball team wanted to make a point that they can still produce runs after leaving eight on base in their 2-0 loss to Downey two days ago.

Consider that point made.

Opening off the Whittier Tournament with a bang, the Pirates would defeat Sylmar, 11-0 in five innings, then follow it up with an 11-1, five inning win over Ramona Convent of Alhambra in two pool play games at Cantwell Sacred Heart High. In those two games combined, the Pirates would pile up 24 hits, including four home runs, four doubles and three triples.

Against Sylmar, sophomore second baseman Johnie Cortez would blast her first career home run, and go 3-for-3 with a triple and 2 RBIs with two runs scored, missing the cycle by a double, as she walked in her fourth plate appearance.

Junior third baseman Angelina Boskovich went 3-for-4 with a triple and three runs scored, while juniors Doreen Corella and Jocelyn Kondash both had two hits for the Pirates (5-2 overall) against the Spartans (4-4), while senior first baseman Michelle Duarte added two RBIs. Junior right fielder Mattie Linares went 2-for-2 at the plate.

Sophomore catcher Alexa Ponce tripled and scored twice for San Pedro.

San Pedro would then let loose against Ramona Convent (1-3) with a ten-run second inning, which included a pair of two-run homers by Kondash and sophomore left fielder Cayla Ezelle, and then sophomore Taylor Richter punctuated the inning with a grand slam for her second homer of the season. Boskovich hit another triple and went 2-for-3 with two runs scored, while Kondash (2-0) also earned the victory allowing three hits and one run, striking out two.

Junior pitcher Jaclyn Rivera (3-2) pitched five solid innings against Sylmar, hurling a three-hit shutout with three strikeouts and no walks.

The Pirates will next travel to Peninsula of Rolling Hills Estates for a key doubleheader on Monday.
