The 2014 All-San Pedro News Pilot Prep Boys Soccer Team

The 2013-2014 season is officially over for prep boys soccer in San Pedro, and all three teams gave it their best shot with San Pedro and Mary Star High both making the playoffs, and Port Of Los Angeles narrowly missing the CIF-Los Angeles City Section Division III playoffs.

San Pedro senior forward Daniel Powell made the biggest impact this season, with three different Marine League games where he produced a hat trick, while producing yet another hat trick during the first round of the CIF-LACS Division I playoffs at Monroe of North Hills, where the Pirates won, 4-3 in overtime.
Those four hat tricks, along with scoring a game-winning goal in the final minute of a 2-1 Marine League win over Carson on January 22, is why Powell is our 2014 San Pedro News Pilot Prep Boys Soccer Player Of The Year.
San Pedro went 12-4-2 this season under coach Peter Hazdovac, placing second in the Marine League with a 7-2-1 mark, with the only two losses coming at the hands of eventual league champion Narbonne of Harbor City. The Pirates also posted a 2-0 nonleague win over neighbor POLA on December 9.
The season ended for the Pirates in the quarterfinals with a 1-0 loss to Locke of Los Angeles on February 26.
Mary Star made the CIF-Southern Section Division VII playoffs with a dramatic 2-1 win at St. Paul of Santa Fe Springs on February 14 in a playoff game for third place in the Camino Real League, then won a 3-0 game at Bishop Diego of Santa Barbara in Division VII wild-card game. The Stars finished 12-6-3 overall, 5-4-1 in league after losing 3-0 to Milken of Los Angeles on February 20 in the first round of the Division VII playoffs.
Even though POLA went 3-11-2 overall against tough competition, they still were within earshot of reaching the playoffs and all they needed was a victory over Rancho Dominguez Prep to clinch a spot. Unfortunately, the season finale on February 14 with the Lobos ended in a scoreless tie, knocking the Polar Bears out of the playoffs.
Junior forward Casey Kane provided the Polar Bears' best moment with a goal in the 75th minute that tied their neighboring showdown with Mary Star on December 11, while sophomore forward Giovanny Salazar provided a hat trick in their Crosstown League opener against Harbor Teacher Prep on January 22, which was a 4-1 Polar Bear victory.
