The 2014 high school football season is drawing near, and for Mary Star Of The Sea High football, it's a whole new world, again.
Realignment moves have taken place again in the CIF-Southern Section all over Southern California, and the same holds true for the 17 Catholic schools in the Camino Real, Del Rey and Santa Fe League Association.
To dissect the Stars' 2014 schedule in a nutshell... there is no Verbum Dei or La Salle, and Mary Star is no longer in the Del Rey League, which was dominated by those two schools last season. St. Bernard, Cantwell Sacred-Heart of Montebello and Bishop Montgomery of Torrance are still on the schedule, but they are no longer Del Rey League games for the Stars.
Mary Star now competes in the Santa Fe League with Bell-Jeff of Burbank (who will not field a varsity football team this season), St. Genevieve of Panorama City, St. Anthony of Long Beach and St. Monica of Santa Monica. Mary Star defeated St. Monica, but lost to St. Anthony, so they have experience against two of the SFL teams. Bosco Tech of Rosemead also made the move from the Del Rey League along with the Stars to the newly-reformed Santa Fe League.
Mary Star will have a bye on September 12 due to Chadwick of Rolling Hills Estates moving down to 8-man football which cancelled what would have been a home game. Flintridge Prep of La Canada and St. Genevieve are the only newcomers to the Stars' schedule, with the Aquinas season opener now being moved to Narbonne High of Harbor City due to improvements being made at Daniels Field.
The game against Flintridge Prep on October 24 is a nonleague game to make up for what would have been a Santa Fe League road game at Bell-Jeff of Burbank
Head coach Mike Marinkovich lost 21 seniors from last year's team that narrowly missed the playoffs with a 4-6 record despite their even 3-3 record in the Del Rey League that had victories over Cantwell, St. Bernard of Playa Del Rey and Bosco Tech, but he still returns some key talent in junior WR/DB Vinny Lauro, junior RB/DB/K Nicholas Renfroe, senior RB/LB Vicente Perez and junior OL/DT Kevin Lopez.
The Santa Fe League road games at St. Genevieve and St. Monica will be on a Saturday on the dates listed here on the schedule shown below.
