The 2015 San Pedro Prep Football scene was very entertaining.
It saw the re-birth of Mary Star High football, the emergence of a potential star on the rise as a sophomore, an amazing one-year run of a particular Star, plus the going-out party of three of the top gridiron seniors in town. One in particular made play after play that made him stand out above the rest... even after a potentially crippling mistake.
Early in the second quarter of a pivotal Marine League game at Carson on October 30, San Pedro High football senior Antonio 'A.J.' Frazier Jr., a reliable punt returner with sure hands and two punt return touchdowns already coming in, would shockingly muff a punt, and the Colts recovered on the San Pedro 27-yard line. Down 7-0, it appeared that Carson would make Frazier Jr. pay the price for giving them that second chance.
Turned out to be the other way around.
Carson quarterback Dayshawn Littleton would try a slant pass over the middle in attempt to get a first down or even come away with the equalizing score, but Frazier Jr. read the play perfectly, made a leap, grabbed the ball, made a cutback, saw a huge hole to the right side, and go coast-to-coast for the backbreaking 89-yard touchdown.
"We just practiced against that play a lot during practice, so I knew it was coming," says Frazier Jr., the 2015 San Pedro News Pilot Prep Football Player Of The Year. "I put myself in the right position and I made the play."
Whenever San Pedro (7-5 overall in 2015) needed a play, Frazier Jr. would be right there to oblige.
One of the better all-around players in recent memory, Frazier Jr. accounted for 1,049 all-purpose yards, registering 99 tackles and scoring touchdowns in four different ways (2 rushing, 2 punt returns, receiving, interception return), while also breaking up six passes. That one turnaround play in that 35-7 win over Carson was his only interception of the season, but it certainly came at one of the more crucial moments of the year.
Another play that Frazier Jr. made that stood out was his 64-yard punt return touchdown in a 45-21 victory over Roosevelt of Los Angeles on September 3, which also came in the second quarter. Playing the punt on the bounce, Frazier Jr. immediately made one more to elude the first defender and took off, hitting the pylon in a flash.
"That was a fun play," Frazier Jr. said. "I saw the hole and I hit it fast."
Finishing his prep career in grand style, Frazier Jr. garnered his third consecutive All CIF-Los Angeles City Section Division I first team defensive selection, and his second straight Marine League Co-Defensive Player Of The Year award after being the sole owner of that accomplishment in 2014.
" I will miss the bus rides home after a win and being in the locker room after we won a big game," Frazier Jr. says when asked of what he'll miss the most from his playing days as a Pirate.
Also, Mary Star senior running back William Davis is the 2015 Most Outstanding Player after coming over from now Division I-A CIF State champion Narbonne of Harbor City to inject a bruising style to first-year coach Jason Gelber's run-oriented no-huddle offense. Davis was named the Santa Fe League Offensive Player Of The Year after rushing for 1,548 yards and 16 touchdowns on 171 carries, averaging a blistering 9.1 yards per carry.
Outgoing senior running back Vinny Lauro proved to be a perfect compliment to Davis by also rushing for 1,028 yards and 16 touchdowns on 149 carries for the Stars (6-5 overall), who returned to CIF-Southern Section playoffs (East Valley Division) for the first time since 2012.
Making the biggest mark in his final weeks of the year was no doubt San Pedro senior quarterback Jacob Miller, as he would throw for 6 touchdown passes in the Pirates' two CIF-LACS Division I playoff games, including completing 23-of-47 passes (almost unheard of in ANY San Pedro football game) for 214 yards, setting a career-high in all facets, to go with three touchdowns in the 55-24 quarterfinal loss to Narbonne.
Miller finished 78-of-147 passing for the year with 1,056 yards, 15 touchdowns and five interceptions for San Pedro despite missing two early games due to an ankle injury, making All-Marine League for the third straight year.
