Event Description

Join Cabrillo Marine Aquarium staff and volunteers on a scientific observation and collecting expedition to Catalina Island.

Once near the island, passengers will have an opportunity to assist staff in pulling up traps that have been set the day before, including special traps for hagfish, also known as "slime eels."

Other species caught in traps or retrieved by divers include swell sharks, horn sharks, spiny lobsters, moray eels and many others that will be placed in a wading pool for close-up observation and study. Collected specimens are either released unharmed into the sea or put on display at the aquarium.

Upon arriving at Two Harbors, we will go ashore and explore the isthmus, a remote part of the island seldom visited by tourists.

On the return trip we meet up with the aquarium's boat that will conduct controlled chumming for blue and mako sharks. We will be able to observe these animals at close range and tag them for future study.

And of course we will be on the lookout for whales, dolphins, sea birds, sea lions, seals and wide variety of other marine animals throughout the trip.

Catalina Above and Below is a fun and highly educational trip for the whole family.

Pre-registration is required. Please call 310-548-7562 to reserve your spot today!

Member Price: $85, Non-Member Price: $95
