Cindy Robles Hurls No-Hitter In Tight Win For SPHS Softball

It hasn't happened since the Taylor Petty days, but San Pedro High softball finally got a complete game, seven-inning no-hitter when they most needed it.

Senior pitcher Cindy Robles would deliver the goods in what would be her first career no-hitter for the host Pirates in a 1-0 victory over Palos Verdes on Tuesday in an intersectional battle that could have gone either way.

Robles would retire 21 of the Sea Kings' 23 batters faced, only surrendering a walk with two outs in the seventh inning to go along with six strikeouts. Palos Verdes' only other baserunner came via an error on junior first baseman Quincy Greenwood to lead off the sixth inning, ending Robles' string of 15 straight retired batters in five perfect innings.

This was San Pedro's first seven-inning no-hitter or perfect game since 2008.

San Pedro (3-2-1 overall) would only manage six hits offensively on their own, leaving a runner on second base in the fourth inning, but would finally break the scoreless deadlock in the bottom of the sixth inning.

With one out, senior center fielder Andrea Trejo somehow managed a bloop single to right field in front of a deep Palos Verdes (0-3) outfield rotation, and then senior catcher Andrea Cline didn't want to wait around, blasting the first pitch she saw up the middle, then a misplay by the Palos Verdes center fielder would allow Trejo to score from first before Cline was thrown out at third base.

The inning finally ended when junior right fielder Anessa Quiroz struck out looking after a two-out double from senior third baseman Ricki Justiniano kept the inning alive a little longer.

Robles was unflappable the entire afternoon, and got valuable help from her defense, with two catches in left field from San Pedro sophomore Taiya Reyna, and spectacular plays at shortstop from freshman Briana Velazquez who celebrated her 15th birthday.

Out of San Pedro's six hits, Cline had three of them, going 3-for-3 with the double and an RBI, only seeing four pitches the entire game and connecting on the first pitch twice to show her accurate aggressiveness at the plate.

San Pedro will next face Harbor Teacher Prep at home on Thursday.
