Coastal navigation will be taught by the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary starting Tuesday (April 22) at the Good Shepherd Presbyterian Church in Los Alamitos.
"Most people depend blindly on GPS," said USCG Aux. instructor Doug Conwell, who's scheduled to teach the course, "and, if you haven't kept your position on a paper chart, you're lost (if the GPS stops working)."
Classes will be held every Tuesday for nine weeks from 7 p.m.-9 p.m. The church is located at 11600 Los Alamitos Blvd.
The course is free, but the book and training chart cost $45. Also, students must have parallel rules and dividers, which can be bought at a retail store or from the U.S. Coast Guard Aux. for $12 each.
USCG Aux. 11SR, Flotilla 5-12, Long Beach, is putting on the class. For further information, call Conwell at (562) 304-3497, cell phone; or email him at saltydoug77@gmail.com.
