It may have taken three hard years of junior college to get it done, but the call has finally been answered for former San Pedro High football star Kenny Potter.
The three-sport standout in his four years at San Pedro was more than primed for a blossoming future in playing Division I football in the NCAA, but never got the scholarship offers he hoped for and was forced to take the JC route to try and prove his detractors wrong. Then things took a turn for the worse with a volleyball injury over the summer that forced him to grayshirt at Los Angeles Harbor College.
Once rehabbing to get healthy, Potter took his talent along with coach Brett Peabody, to Long Beach City College and after two years of starring for the Vikings, he would sign his long-overdue national letter of intent to play at San Jose State University on Wednesday at Long Beach City College.
Potter, the 2012 News Pilot Male Athlete Of The Year for his exploits in football, basketball and volleyball during his senior year where he was Marine League MVP in both football and volleyball, threw for 2,943 yards & 34 TDs, while also running for 973 yards & 19 more TDs in his three years on varsity. His senior year was his coming out party as he threw for 1,703 yards a school single-season record 27 touchdowns.
In all during the 2011 season, Potter accounted for 40 touchdowns, also running for 829 yards and 13 touchdowns in leading San Pedro to a 12-1 season, which included a perfect 10-0 regular season and an outright Marine League championship. Potter was named the CIF-Los Angeles City Section Co-Offensive & league co-MVP.
Then to wrap up his spectacular senior year, Potter was All-Marine League second team in basketball and the Marine League Co-MVP in volleyball as well.
Potter threw for 25 touchdowns in his freshman season at Long Beach City, helping to turn around the fortunes of a program that went 0-10 in 2012, to a 4-6 season in 2013. This year, the Vikings were much improved despite the fact Potter only played seven games, as he suffered a partially broken left (non-throwing) elbow during a 41-38 victory over Mount San Antonio in a classic showdown on October 4.
Long Beach City went 9-2, including a 75-41 victory over Golden West College on November 22 in the Beach Bowl where Potter shined, completing 21-of-30 passes for 381 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions, while also running for 53 yards and two more touchdowns in being named Beach Bowl MVP.
For the season, Potter completed 122-of-195 passes (62.6%) for 1,726 yards, 15 touchdowns and six interceptions while also rushing for 435 yards and seven touchdowns on 66 carries. In 17 games with the Vikings, the 6-foot-3, 210-pound dual-threat quarterback completed 63.7 percent of his passes for 4,534 yards, 40 touchdowns and 19 interceptions, also rushing for 1,027 yards and 21 touchdowns. He was a two-time All-Central League selection.
Potter will join a San Jose State team that went 3-9 this season.
