Mary Star High Boys & Girls Soccer Clinch League Titles

It's not often where one school can clinch two league championships on the same day but...

On Thursday, the Mary Star High boys soccer team continues on its hot run and ended the 2015-2016 regular season on a high with a 1-0 victory over host Don Bosco Tech of Rosemead to cap off a Camino Real League championship run while back home at Mary Star, the girls soccer team repeated as Santa Fe League champions with a dominant 8-0 victory over visiting Serra of Gardena.

In the girls game, freshman midfielder Rose Amalfitano scored three goals, with her third being a spectacular 35-yard free kick for the first of five second half goals that turned a somewhat relatively close game into a runaway for the Stars (11-7 overall, 7-1 in league). Also adding goals were seniors Karina Amezcua and Ling-Ling N, juniors Kaylee Rucker and Gabriella Ferrandino, and freshman Berenise Casillas all scored.

Junior goalie Taylor Garcia only needed three saves for the shutout as she was benefited by strong defensive play by several Stars, such as senior Alyssa DiMassa, junior Yesenia Tahuite, senior Aileen Rangel, and help from other midfielders like junior Shawnie Carolla, senior Giovanna Rios and freshman Anne Marie Spraijla.

Meanwhile over at Bosco Tech, sophomore forward Victor Garnier's second half goal was all the Mary Star boys (15-3-1 overall, 8-2 league) needed to win their first league crown since 2011. Senior goalie Nick DiLeva posted seven shutouts in Mary Star's eight Camino Real League victories. Technically, the Stars won nine out of the ten but forfeited Monday's 2-0 win at Serra.

After suffering a 2-1 overtime loss to St. Genevieve of Panorama City on January 13 to start league, the Stars never lost a game on the field again for the rest of the regular season as they got inspired play from several contributors in coach Chris Guastella's second season.

Senior Jarod Alves, juniors Ervin Rodas-Lima, Fernando Franco, Xavier Martinez and Jaime Casiano, and sophomore Jesus Aguilera have all contributed mightily in the impressive run for the Mary Star boys, who open the CIF-Southern Section Division V playoffs at home next Friday, and the girls will start the CIF-SS Division VII playoffs next Thursday at home.

Pairings will be announced for all divisions on Monday morning.
