Grunions are a small silvery fish that come up on the beach en mass to spawn and is peculiar to Southern California. The fish come in at high tide when a male wraps himself around a female which is partly buried in the sand, to fertilize the eggs. During the following high tide, the eggs are washed out to see and turn into fish.
The Cabrillo Marine Aquarium presents a program called "Meet the Grunion" which teaches visitors about unique spawning process and allows them to hatch their own Grunions in a jar.
Grunion may only be caught in the months of March, June and July.
$5 adults, $1 seniors, students and children.
