The after-season awards just keep on coming for Port Of Los Angeles High School softball.
After guiding the Polar Bears to their third consecutive CIF-Los Angeles City Section Division 3 title on May 25, fourth-year head coach Melissa Bugarin-Espinoza was bestowed one of the highest honors ever by Cal-Hi Sports as she was named the Small Schools Coach Of The Year for all of California.
It's the fourth honor awarded to Bugarin-Espinoza this season, following up her CIF-Los Angeles City Section Small Schools Division, Torrance Daily Breeze and of course, the San Pedro News Pilot Coach Of The Year honors that she also gladly shares with her right-hand man and husband Moses. Also, POLA softball finished with the overall top ranking for all California schools in Division V (5), naming them officially mythical state champions in that division.
Bugarin-Espinoza put POLA through a rigorous tournament stretch at Redondo Union, the Torrance National, the Las Vegas Spring Jamboree and the El Segundo Tournaments, and the Polar Bears came out of it with some impressive victories and a record in those tournaments of 12-8 combined. POLA went 28-8 overall en route to capturing a third straight Crosstown League championship, and third straight CIF-LACS title.
Overall, Bugarin-Espinoza is the second prep coach from San Pedro to earn Cal-Hi Sports Coach Of The Year honors and is the first since San Pedro softball coaching legend Tony Dobra, who was the 2009 overall Coach Of The Year.
Here is the final Cal-Hi Sports Division 5 State Softball Top Ten Rankings that officially named POLA the champions for that division, a first in San Pedro Prep Sports history.
