GRANADA HILLS - Down a run and just two outs away from their season ending, the San Pedro High softball team needed a hero with runners on second and third base.
They found one in junior infielder Michelle Corona.
Most recently the Pirates, notably Corona, had struggled with runners in scoring position, but not on this exchange as Corona drilled a two-run single to right field, powering San Pedro to a dramatic 2-1 comeback victory at Granada Hills in the first round of the CIF-Los Angeles City Section Division I playoffs. That play was just another clutch playoff moment in an endless stream of clutch playoff moments for tenth-seeded San Pedro (18-13 overall).
Corona's hit drove home junior outfielder Doreen Corella and senior Sylene Phayget, who ran for junior catcher Armida Roman. Roman led off the top of the seventh inning with a single. Corona would deliver with her winning hit and out and two batters later.
Junior pitcher Jaclyn Rivera pitched a complete-game five-hitter for San Pedro. Rivera may have only struck out one batter, but it was more than enough to eliminate the seventh-seeded Highlanders (14-18).
Sophomore outfielder Taylor Richter went 3-for-4 at the plate, while sophomore outfielder Cayla Ezelle also hit well going 2-for-3 for the Pirates, who gets a third opportunity at second-seeded El Camino Real of Woodland Hills in Thursday's quarterfinal round. San Pedro has been eliminated by the defending City champion Conquistadores in each of the last two playoffs by identical 2-1 scores, including last year's quarterfinals.
