POLAHS Softball Dominates CIF-LACS Playoff Opener

Quick and painless...

That's exactly how the Port Of Los Angeles High softball team wanted their first round CIF-Los Angeles City Section Division III playoff opener against visiting New Designs of Los Angeles to go.

Going on a ten-run outburst in the second inning after opening off the game with six runs in the first, the top-seeded Polar Bears made no bones about their intentions of a three-peat by routing the No.16 Cardinals, 17-1 in five innings at the San Pedro Girls Softball Association Field. POLA (25-8 overall) pounded out 13 hits, six went for extra bases, to lead the way into Thursday's quarterfinal round.

Sophomore pitcher Nicolle Miranda only pitched two innings for the win, striking out all six batters she faced on 25 pitches, while also going 3-for-3 at the plate with a triple and 2 RBIs.

Junior first baseman Allison Bayer got the Polar Bears' ten-run, second inning onslaught started by crushing a two-run home run. On the very next pitch, sophomore second baseman Rosemary Garcia blasted a line drive down the left field line for another home run. From that point on, it was evident POLA was in charge.

Also in that second inning, Garcia added an RBI-double, Miranda brought in another run with a triple, Bayer added a second RBI-hit in the inning with a single, senior catcher Brianna Grayson brought in a run with a sacrifice fly, and sophomore shortstop Savana Ramirez, who tripled after Garcia's home run, brought in another run with a single. Sophomore 3B/CF Adriana Vargas hit a two-run single in the first inning for the Polar Bears.

Miranda's RBI-single in the first brought in the game's opening run. Garcia brought in two more runs on sacrifice flies in the first and fourth innings to finish 2-for-2 with 4 RBIs. Bayer went 3-for-3 with a home run and 2 RBIs for the Polar Bears.

POLA will face South Region No.9 of South Gate, a 4-3 winner over No.8 Vaughn of San Fernando, in the quarterfinals on Thursday at Bloch Field in San Pedro.
