CARSON - In two extraordinary individual performances, two records were broken in a pair of nonleague victories for Port Of Los Angeles High boys and girls basketball over rival New Millennium of Carson.
In the girls game, junior forward Angela Wade was simply unstoppable in leading the Polar Bears to a 69-46 victory over the host Warriors, as she scored a career-high, and school record 30 points. Wade also contributed with five rebounds, four steals and five assists as POLA improves to a sparkling 8-2 on the season. Junior guard Alex Espinoza was also key in scoring 14 points, to go along with 9 rebounds and 4 steals.
Sophomore guard Mayan Rodriguez provided a well-balanced effort with 8 points, 6 assists, 6 steals and 4 rebounds for the Polar Bears, who bolted to a 23-8 first-quarter surge before cruising to victory.
Meanwhile in the boys game, senior guard Jaylyn Morgan was sensational, scoring a career-high and school record 28 points in guiding POLA to a 62-60 win over New Millennium Morgan's effort was well needed in a game the Polar Bears dominated early, leading 27-10 at the end of the first quarter, and 36-18 at halftime.
Senior Joseph Alex was also solid for the Warriors (1-6), as he scored 24 points in help pacing New Millennium to a spirited comeback that just fell short at the end.
Junior Cameron Cole was solid for POLA (4-2 overall), contributing with 11 points, 8 rebounds and five blocks, while senior Joe Walker scored 10 for the Polar Bears, who will continue play in the Downey Calvary Chapel Tournament on Monday.
