LOS ANGELES - It wasn't pretty, but the San Pedro High boys and girls basketball teams both rolled into King-Drew Medical Magnet of Los Angeles and came out with a pair of Marine League victories.
For the boys, their 82-68 victory over the Golden Eagles put them at 7-0 for the season, while the girls' 48-36 win gave the Lady Pirates their first league win and improved their record to 2-2. It was the second win of the week for the girls basketball team, who earlier in the week defeated Elizabeth Learning Center of Cudahy.
First off, the girls started strong but had to fend off a spirited effort from King-Drew (1-1 overall, 0-1 league) who never led but did push San Pedro (2-2, 1-1) the majority of the second half. After a three-pointer put the Golden Eagles to within 32-30 with 7:22 left in the fourth quarter, the Lady Pirates would close the game on a 16-6 run. Sophomore guard Rita Fiorenza was once again the ringleader with 17 points, 7 rebounds, 5 assists and 4 steals.
Junior forwards Cheyenne Alvarez and Alejandra Macias were also key for San Pedro down the stretch during that game-clinching run.
Macias finished with 10 points and seven rebounds, while Alvarez had 7 points, 5 rebounds and three assists.
In the nightcap, the boys were simply immaculate with their quick burst of points due to the overwhelming pressure on defense, bolting to a 54-28 halftime lead. King-Drew (7-4, 1-1) would cut their large deficit to 78-66 with 2:28 left in the fourth quarter but would not get any closer than that.
Senior guard Austin Freitas would score 23 points off the bench to power the Pirates (7-0, 2-0), somehow finding his way through the teeth of the Golden Eagles defense for easy layups. Junior forward Quincy Thomas scored 19 points to go along with eight rebounds and three blocks, while senior guard Elijah Gaines contributed with 14 points, six rebounds and five steals.
Also making an impact was the two junior point guards, starter Isaac Stell and backup Khalil Dave.
Stell was simply terrific in finding teammates, even delivering two scintillating no-look passes in the first half that led to 'And-1' layups from Thomas. Stell would finish with 4 points and 9 assists. Dave was also great in eluding defenders with amazing dribbling and it led to him scoring 3 points and delivering 4 assists for San Pedro.
The boys continue play next week at the Hoover High Tournament in Fresno, California, while the girls will resume play the day after Christmas at the Cantwell Sacred Heart Tournament.
