Port Of Los Angeles High girls soccer has a great group of talented players who are willing to do whatever is necessary to bring them back to the CIF-Los Angeles City Section Division III championship game.
One player in particular that embodies their drive for excellence is senior forward Nikki Bonilla.
The four-year veteran and surefire All-City Section selection has been truly unstoppable since the turn of 2013 began, as Bonilla has been lighting up teams with a deadly leg that has produced an incredible 29 goals this season, 23 of those goals coming in the Crosstown League. The Polar Bears (15-5-1 overall) begin their quest in the Division III playoffs against the winner of USC-Mast/Middle College on Thursday, 3pm at Daniels Field.
Bonilla may score a lot of goals, but what many don't realize is she's not the type of person who prefers 'star treatment' like many players in many sports at higher levels do.
Strictly speaking, Nikki has a purpose for every single goal she scores, and that's because she's always in the team frame of mind in trying to help guide POLA to victories, especially since this year's team decided to challenge themselves in the San Pedro Pirate Cup and South Torrance Holiday Tournaments against bigger schools.
Last year, Bonilla scored 18 goals, but her last two came in perhaps the Polar Bears' biggest victory in their short history thus far in the 2012 CIF-LACS Division III semifinals against Fulton College Prep of Van Nuys.
Her first goal from that game in particular, should explain the persistence of Bonilla's resolve.
Current sophomore Tiffany Torres was able to get free and blast a shot off the Fulton College Prep goalie, but in comes a hard-charging Bonilla, who saw the ball bounce off the goalie and then simply poked a blistering shot through the high-left center area of the net. It brought the POLA support group at Daniels Field into a frenzy late in the first half.
What may get lost in Bonilla's brilliance this season is that she's also third on the team with 12 assists, finding other scoring options like Torres, Samantha Foxworthy, Alyssa Bristol, Isabela Van Antwerp, Ariella Martinez and Melissa Rodriguez.
Even when teams plan their game around Bonilla, other Polar Bears can make them pay the price.
All in the frame of the team... that's how Nikki Bonilla likes it even when she's not involved in the action.
