San Pedro High JV Girls Basketball Makes Their Mark In 2013

It was a season many wouldn't have dreamed of, but the San Pedro High JV girls basketball team definitely worked hard enough to achieve it.

The 2012-2013 Pirates, normally not known for their girls basketball prowess, would turn heads not only around the campus, but mainly the heads of all who opposed them by going completely undefeated in twelve Marine League games to claim the outright championship after a 39-28 victory over visiting Gardena this past Friday. Overall, the Pirates also beat the likes of University of Los Angeles, Elizabeth Learning Center of Cudahy, and Serra of Gardena in the Gardena Tournament to eventually go 17-3.

Coach Sammie Miner along with assistants Seqouia Gaines and Adrian Herrera instilled in them the belief that they can do anything on the court if they believed in themselves... mission accomplished.

San Pedro would make a statement early on in the Marine League slate with a 22-18 win over host Narbonne of Harbor City, a program that has won 11 CIF-Los Angeles City Section titles, back on January 11, and then would follow it up with an even more impressive 33-23 victory over the Gauchos at San Pedro High on February 1 to complete an unlikely sweep.

Against Gardena in the season finale, the Lady Pirates dominated early with an early 25-8 lead in the third quarter, but the Panthers would dramatically go on a 15-0 run to cut their deficit down to two. From there, the defense would buckle down and San Pedro would outscore the Panthers, 14-5 the rest of the way.

Junior forward Amber Ruiz, sophomore guard Elizabeth Watts, freshman guard Crystal Redd, junior G/F Linda Ortiz and sophomore point guard Samantha Guajaca were the key players for San Pedro, but this team was full of contributors who would stop at nothing to bring some well-deserved respect to the Pirates' girls basketball program.

Sophomore guard Miranda Abarca provided some outside scoring. Freshman guard Sofie Mascola missed most of the season due to a knee injury, but whenever she stepped onto the court she provided some excellent basketball smarts and toughness that was unmatched by those who competed against her. Junior forward Nancy Silva provided some great all-around skills and is a tenacious defender.

Sophomore F/C Sabree Atchinson was a great post presence on both sides of the court... and she's also an amazing talent elsewhere at San Pedro High as a member of the Golden Pirate Regiment marching band. Rounding out the rest of this amazing team is junior forwards Cecilia Partida and Vianeth Gonzalez, sophomore forwards Lauren Peterson and Shanice Cortez, and junior guard Bethania Montanez.

Congratulations to the San Pedro High JV girls basketball team on their historic season.
