The 8th annual LA Harbor International Film Festival kicked off Thursday morning at the Warner Grand Theater in San Pedro, with local schools being invited for a viewing of Treasure Island. The students participated in the Festival's "Read the Book, See the Movie" program.
The Festival continues with a showing of "Joe's Sea" (Il mare di Joe) onThursday, April 14 at 7:30pm. The film directed by Enzo Incontro, takes the viewer from Sicily to California to Alaska on the trail of legendary fisherman Joe Bonanno who left the Sicilian island of Marettimo during the last century and emigrated to America seeking more opportunity and a better future for his family. His story represents an entire epoch of many who re-built their lives thanks to the flourishing fishing industry that was at its peak on the west coast of the United States from the 1930's to 1950's. The festival says Bonanno has been invited to the showing and hopes he will attend as an honored guest of the LAHIFF. Tickets are on sale at the Warner Grand Theater for $15 starting at 6:00pm.
A FREE screening of The Joy Luck Club will be shown on Friday April 15 at 7:30pm. The 1993 award-winning film based on the best selling novel by Amy Tan. Actress Tamlyn Tomita, who portrayed Waverly Jong in the movie, is tentatively scheduled to speak before the 7:30 screening.
The festival continues on Saturday, April 16, with the Hollywood Nostalgia Tribute from 5:00pm - 6:30 pm, honoring stars Shirley Jones and Pat Boone of the Academy Award nominated film April Love, followed by a screening of the film at 7:00pm.
