When you set a new standard of strikeout excellence, postseason awards are sure to come in the world of high school sports.
So it comes as no surprise that Port Of Los Angeles High softball junior Analise De La Roca would receive such a high honor when the CIF-Los Angeles City Section announced their 2016 All-City selections this past Friday.
De La Roca, the Arizona State commit, was chosen as the City Section Division I Co-Most Valuable Pitcher, sharing the honor with senior Emma Jackson of El Camino Real of Woodland Hills, who rallied to topple De La Roca and the Polar Bears on May 18 in the semifinals, before winning a classic ten-inning duel with Banning of Wilmington, 2-1 for their 15th CIF-LACS title on May 21 at Cal State Dominguez Hills.
It was a magnificent all-around season for De La Roca, who was the No.2 pitcher behind former three-time CIF-LACS Pitcher Of The Year Nicolle Miranda her first two seasons at POLA.
For the entire 2016 season, De La Roca broke an eight-year CIF-LACS single-season record with 408 strikeouts, finishing 26-4 with a 0.43 ERA, 20 shutouts, 5 no-hitters and three perfect games, allowing only 19 runs (12 earned), 31 walks and ten hit batters in 197 innings pitched, and 2,760 pitches thrown. On May 4, De La Roca struck out 20 out of 21 batters in a Coliseum League season finale at Crenshaw of Los Angeles.
De La Roca also did damage at the plate, hitting .521 with 4 home runs, 49 hits, 16 doubles and 37 RBIs with 13 runs scored (mainly because she was ran for), only striking out three times, drawing 16 walks with an on base percentage of .609, and a .840 slugging percentage.
After placing only three All-City players out of the San Pedro-area schools, this year, five made All-City as De La Roca was not alone on the All-City Division I first team.
The San Pedro High junior battery of pitcher Cindy Robles and catcher Andrea Cline would make the All-City Division I team for the first time, as the two would pace the Pirates to a 16-11-2 record, and a third place finish in the Marine League at 7-3, taking POLA to the limit on two occasions, also defeating Carson for the first time in five years.
San Pedro junior third baseman Ricki Justiniano made the All-City Division 1 team as a second team infielder, and POLA sophomore utility star Angie Vargas garnered an All-City Division 1 second team pitcher selection, as she was the only person other than De La Roca to garner a decision in the circle for the Polar Bears (27-5 in 2016).
Carson senior third baseman Aniesa Maulupe, a Long Beach State commit, was named Division I Player Of The Year.
