It was a double Homecoming for the Port Of Los Angeles High boys and girls basketball teams, and they gave all their fans and alumni a lot to cheer about against visiting Foshay Learning Center of Los Angeles.
First off, the girls team used a 28-8 run that carried from midway through the second quarter towards the third quarter to break open a close game and roll to a 50-21 victory over the Wolverines, and then the boys followed it up with a 47-24 victory at Peck Park Community Center in San Pedro.
Senior forward Jordan Bonner had nine points, six rebounds and four steals as the Polar Bears (2-2) have now won two straight after dropping their first two games of the season in the Chadwick Tournament. POLA's boys basketball team is the defending Crosstown League champions. Senior guard Gareth Young had eight points and senior guard Jayln Morgan had seven points for the Polar Bears.
On the girls side, junior forward Angela Wade had 15 points, three rebounds, three steals and three assists to lead the Lady Bears who are now 3-1 overall, rebounding from a one-point loss to California Academy of Math & Science (CAMS) of Carson in the Chadwick Tournament. Wade is also a member of the CIF-Los Angeles City Section Small Schools runner-up girls volleyball team at POLA.
Sophomore guard Mayan Rodriguez added 13 points for POLA, while senior forward Cynthia Vargas, another girls volleyball standout, added six points.
