The San Pedro High girls soccer team starts off strong with a 4-2 victory over visiting Sylmar in a nonleague season opening game for both teams that was moved from the main campus to the John M. & Muriel Olguin campus due to the rainy conditions at Pirate Stadium.
Any win over a San Fernando Valley school is huge for San Pedro considering the troubled history the Pirates have in contending against those powerhouse schools from that area. Last year, the Pirates lost in the CIF-Los Angeles City Section Division I quarterfinals to Cleveland of Reseda after defeating the Cavaliers during the regular season.
Senior Analisa Ma scored twice to spark the Pirates, while senior Sydney Lezberg and sophomore Kirsten Bauman also added goals.
San Pedro is the seven-time defending Marine League champion.
San Pedro will next face Torrance on the road Monday, but will have to go at it without senior midfielder and captain Joanna Perone, who was ejected for drawing a red card for continuous arguing with an official.
