San Pedro High girls basketball sensation Rita Fiorenza was magnificent, as she intends to not show any hint of the proverbial 'sophomore slump'... but it wasn't enough to save the Lady Pirates in their 2012-2013 season opener against visiting University of Los Angeles.
Despite the 26-point outburst from the sophomore guard, San Pedro lost 57-37 to the Wildcats, who forced 24 turnovers on defense and that led to easy layups and put-back chances.
Fiorenza would hit 10-of-17 shots from the field and all six of her free-throw chances, while also adding five rebounds, four assists, three steals and a block for San Pedro. The next highest scorer for the Lady Pirates was four points from junior guard Mia Fulse.
Junior guard Cheyenne Alvarez (3 points), senior guard Melina Lopez and sophomore guard Mireya Ramirez had the other buckets for San Pedro, who only attempted one three-pointer the entire night, and it was a miss by Fiorenza.
The Pirates have a whole ten-day layoff before their next game... a road game at Elizabeth Learning Center of Cudahy on Monday, December 10 at 4pm.
