DOWNEY - Port Of Los Angeles High has never won a regular season tournament championship in any sport since the school opened in 2005.
Until now.
The Polar Bears girls basketball team became instant ground-breakers with their 56-40 victory over host Downey Calvary Chapel to claim their, and the school's first regular season tournament championship at Calvary Chapel High Friday, which also improves their record to 4-0 on the season. Freshman guard Kyerstin Galloway was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player after scoring a game-high 18 points.
Junior point guard Mayan Rodriguez (6 points) was also named to the all-tournament team.
Senior forward Alex Espinoza chipped in with 14 points, and fellow senior forward Angela Wade scored 10 for POLA, who jumped out to a 33-17 halftime lead, which ballooned up to 44-23 through three quarters with a relentless, in-your-face full court pressure defense.
POLA will look to make another huge statement on Monday as they travel crosstown to face San Pedro.
