LAS VEGAS - The Port Of Los Angeles High softball team looked to continue their wave of momentum from three straight wins at the Torrance National Tournament with two pool play games at the Spring Jamboree Tournament in Las Vegas, Nevada, and they did not disappoint.
Two straight shutout victories were the result of the Polar Bears' first two games, knocking off Jordan of Long Beach, 16-0 in four innings, and then blanking Empire of Arizona, 6-0 for a hot start in their first Vegas excursion.
Against Jordan, junior first baseman Allison Bayer went 2-for-3 with a double, a home run and 5 RBIs to lead the charge, while junior shortstop Kelsea Short went 3-for-3 with two triples, a double and 2 RBIs. Then against Empire, the Polar Bears found themselves matched up against a team coached by former Banning of Wilmington standout Laura Espinoza-Watson.
POLA (8-5 overall) would take the fight to Empire early with a two-run inside the park home run by junior outfielder Sarah Maldonado, and a solo home run from sophomore second baseman Rosemary Garcia. Freshman utility player Emily Ibarra would also bring in a run with a sacrifice fly.
Sophomore pitcher Nicolle Miranda struck out 10 for the Polar Bears, now riding a five-game winning streak.
POLA will face Palo Verde of Las Vegas, Nevada in another pool play game on Friday at 9am.
