They may not have been champions on the field, but they are once again champions off of it.
For the second year in a row, the San Pedro High girls soccer team earned a Winter Sports Award championship from the CIF-Los Angeles City Section for accumulating the highest team grade point average.
The eight-time Marine League champion Pirates, who went 11-8-3 overall, 8-0-2 in league, achieved an overall team GPA of 3.5, which was slightly behind last year's team that had a 3.6 GPA, which was tied at the top with Palisades Charter in 2012.
On the field honors for the Pirates were also recently announced as senior midfielder Lauren Mayeda was chosen as the Marine League Most Valuable Player. Mayeda had 6 goals and led the team with 7 assists.
Also making first team All-Marine League were senior forward Joanna Perone (team-leading 17 goals, 6 assists), senior defender Sydney Lezberg, freshman forward Ashley Lopez (9 goals, 4 assists) and freshman goalie Taylor Miller (eight shutouts and 86 saves). Coach Gerhard Weber's team also got valuable contributions from the likes of senior forward Analisa Ma (7 goals, 5 assists), freshman forward Gabriella Ma, sophomore forward Danielle Nunez (1 goal, 5 assists) and sophomore defender Kirsten Bauman (5 goals, 3 assists).
Congratulations once again to the San Pedro High girls soccer program for providing the true definition of 'student-athlete'.
