In the past there has been those aspiring young female athletes who've been able to make a high school football team, many on junior varsity, but never on the varsity level, the majority of them got on varsity as a place kicker.
Not many girls can say they make varsity football as a running back or even a linebacker.
Well... Raynisha Franklin can.
The senior at San Pedro High School made history by becoming the first female varsity football player of the modern era in school history, a remarkable achievement for not only Franklin, but for the school as a whole.
Franklin, who also runs on the track & field team at San Pedro, was able to appear in two of the Pirates' games this season, a 53-0 win over West Adams Prep on August 30, and a 51-7 win over Westchester on September 28, and in both games, she got in to play on defense, coming out without a scratch. She was on the JV team in 2011.
On the track team, Franklin competes in the relay races, long jump and triple jump.
To all those young female athletes out there who want to play prep football, look to Raynisha Franklin for the inspiration. If you can believe, you will achieve, just like Franklin.
