CARSON - The San Pedro High boys volleyball team wasn't able to break through in a high-stakes Marine League matchup at rival Carson where sole possession of first place was up for grabs.
All three sets were close up until the middle portion where the Colts eventually kicked it up a notch, and the end result was a 25-14, 25-22, 25-15 victory, a surprising but emphatic sweep that handed the Pirates (7-4 overall, 5-1 league) their first loss in over a month and knocked them off their rocker.
Senior middle blocker Sean Zuvich had 10 kills, junior outside hitter Jacob Branch added four kills, senior outside hitter Elijah Gaines had three kills, and sophomore middle blocker Conor Healy had three blocks for San Pedro, who lost senior outside hitter Kosta Tzavaras in the first set due to an ankle injury, but Tzavaras would return to action in the third set in attempt to keep the Pirates somewhat in the match.
The moral story was that once Carson got to at least 10 points, that's when their intensity level kicked in, added onto the fact with their home crowd inspiring them, it proved to be too much for San Pedro on this night.
San Pedro will next host King-Drew Medical of Los Angeles Thursday to begin the second half of league play.
