Until someone somehow steps up and takes the challenge head on in the Crosstown League, there's absolutely no one capable of stopping the runaway freight train known as Port Of Los Angeles High softball.
Rancho Dominguez Prep of Long Beach quietly produced an unbeaten record coming into this battle with the host Polar Bears at the San Pedro Girls Softball Association Field, but even that wasn't going to be enough to even contain, let alone quiet the red-hot bats of the reigning two-time CIF-Los Angeles City Section Division III champions, or their own multitude of mistakes.
Serving notice that they are once again the top dog, POLA would cruise to a 21-0, five-inning victory over the Lobos.
Junior shortstop Kelsea Short would go off on a tear, going 3-for-4 with a triple, a booming home run, 3 RBIs and four runs scored to power POLA (12-7 overall, 3-0 league), who also got an inspiring effort from sophomore second baseman Rosemary Garcia, as she hit a pair of three-run home runs, finishing 2-for-4 with 6 RBIs on the day.
Errors plagued Rancho Dominguez Prep (7-1, 4-1) in the first three innings, as they committed a staggering ten miscues on the day.
POLA would put the game to bed in the bottom of the third inning by scoring 13 runs on ten hits, highlighted by Garcia's second three-run home run, Short's two-run homer and RBI-triple, a two-run double by sophomore third baseman Savanna Ramirez, a two-run single by junior center fielder Sarah Maldonado, and an RBI-double down the left field line from sophomore left fielder Adriana Vargas.
Sophomore pitcher Nicolle Miranda (10-7) made her three innings of work look easy, as she struck out all nine batters she faced, while also going 2-for-4 at the plate with 2 RBIs and two runs scored. Sophomore right fielder Tiffany Torres went 2-for-4 with with a stolen base and a run scored for the Polar Bears, who have won ten out of their last 12 games after starting the year at 3-5.
Next up for the Polar Bears is another Crosstown League game on Friday against visiting Animo Venice Charter.
