WILMINGTON - It hasn't happened in a long time, but the San Pedro High girls basketball team of 2013-2014 can now say they started off 2-0 in Marine League competition.
Another well-balanced performance by junior guard Rita Fiorenza, a solid first-quarter surge by senior forward Rayanna McDowell, combined with a stifling defensive effort from several others, the visiting Pirates had little to no problem in defeating Banning of Wilmington, 59-29 for their second straight league victory in three days.
Fiorenza was her usual self, scoring 21 points to go along with 6 assists, 5 steals and 5 rebounds for the Pirates, who got a really good showing from McDowell, who scored eight points in the first quarter. Freshman guard Deanna Valverde scored 7 points off the bench, senior forward Cheyenne Alvarez scored all six of her points in the first half, and senior forward Alejandra Macias added 5 points and 7 rebounds.
San Pedro (5-3 overall, 2-0 league) led from wire-to-wire and had a lead as big as 55-17 midway through the fourth quarter following a three-pointer from junior G/F Emily Iacono. The defense limited the Pilots (3-8, 0-1) to no field goals for the final 6 1/2 minutes of the second quarter before building a 32-12 lead at halftime.
San Pedro will next start the Cantwell Sacred-Heart Tournament on Thursday, December 26.
