The San Pedro High girls basketball team knows tougher battles lie ahead in the Marine League, so they took their opener against visiting King-Drew Medical of Los Angeles very seriously.
Behind solid efforts from junior guard Rita Fiorenza and senior forward Cheyenne Alvarez, the Pirates wasted no possessions, or time in rolling to a 54-25 victory. Fiorenza would score 15 points to lead the charge, 10 of which came in the first half, while Alvarez scored 12 points for San Pedro (4-3 overall, 1-0 league).
San Pedro's defense would limit the Golden Eagles to just five points in the first half for a 32-5 lead, which was more than enough as everyone on the roster got to play for the Pirates, now winners of three straight games, and four out of their last five since starting off the season with back-to-back losses to North Torrance and Mayfair of Lakewood in the Downey Tournament.
Senior forward Rayanna McDowell would score 8 points, junior G/F Emily Iacono would score 5 points, and senior forward Linda Ortiz scored 4 for San Pedro, who will face host Banning of Wilmington on Friday.
