SPHS Softball Can't Shake 5 Errors In Loss To Calvary Chapel

DOWNEY - It's not often where you outhit your opponent and still come up a tad bit short.

That's what happened to the San Pedro High softball team in their Downey Tournament third place game against Calvary Chapel of Downey at Downey High School.

Facing a team with Mississippi State-bound pitcher Larisa Petakoff, the Pirates appeared to be up to the challenge for two innings, but five errors combined in the third and fifth innings led to five unearned runs and a 5-0 deficit before a modest rally in the bottom of the fifth still wasn't quite enough, and San Pedro would lose, 5-3 to the Grizzlies when the game ended after the fifth inning ended due to the tournament time limit.

The five miscues overturned a great pitching effort by San Pedro junior right-hander Jaclyn Rivera, who allowed only three hits with four walks (two intentional walks to Petakoff) and three strikeouts.

You can't knock the Pirates (6-4 overall) for not trying when pushed to the brink however.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, sophomore left fielder Taylor Richter would get a lead-off infield single, then sophomore second baseman Johnie Cortez drew a walk. Sophomore catcher Alexa Ponce would rip a single to right field, but Richter would score when Calvary Chapel senior right fielder Kristina Barron misplayed the ball on a hop.

Two outs later, junior third baseman Jocelyn Kondash belted an two-run single to left to drive home Ponce and Cortez for the final runs of the game. Junior center fielder Doreen Corella's two-out single would extend the game before junior shortstop Angelina Boskovich grounded out to shortstop to end the rally... and the Pirates' hopes of finishing the comeback against Calvary Chapel (11-1).

Petakoff no-hit the Pirates for four innings and struck out six before San Pedro figured her out.

Corella was named to the Downey Tournament's all-tournament team by virtue of going 8-for-14 at the plate in the four games, victories over Valley Christian of Cerritos and Palos Verdes, and a narrow loss to Downey.

San Pedro will next resume play in the Whittier Tournament on Saturday at East Los Angeles College.
