The San Pedro High boys basketball team had three of their most valuable players make the best cut for their outstanding efforts in the Marine League as All-Marine League selections.
For the second year in a row, senior guard Elijah Gaines was a first-team All-Marine League selection. Gaines was All-City Division II last season, and was one of the Pirates' top scorers and assists leaders. One of his best moments was during the Belmont Zone Of Choice Tournament where he delivered a ferocious 'And-1' slam dunk against Bravo Medical Magnet of Los Angeles.
Gaines also paced the Pirates with 18 points in a 55-49 Marine League win over Gardena, who won the CIF-Los Angeles City Section Division II championship earlier this month.
Junior forward Quincy Thomas, who led the Pirates in rebounds, steals and blocks, was a second team All-Marine League pick. Thomas played a major role early in San Pedro's 66-56 season opening win at Huntington Park, scoring 15 of his 23 points in the fourth quarter and overtime, including scoring the game-tying hoop at the end of regulation.
The third All-Marine League selection at honorable mention was senior guard Austin Freitas, San Pedro's deadliest outside threat, hitting 71 three-point field goals. Freitas, also a standout volleyball player, was one pest of a defender in the Pirates' full-court pressure defense, with his best game coming in a Marine League win over King-Drew Medical Magnet where he scored 23 points off the bench.
All three helped San Pedro to a 15-12 overall record and their first Division I playoff appearance, going 5-7 in the Marine League, putting them in a three-way tie for third place with Gardena and Carson.
