SPHS Softball Gets It Done Early In Win Over Palos Verdes

A young San Pedro High softball team that's thin on depth can't afford to get banged up this year, but they looked mighty healthy and sharp against visiting Palos Verdes.

With an early first-inning barrage of hits and runs, it allowed junior pitcher Jaclyn Rivera to settle down and the Pirates would roll to a convincing 12-2 intersectional victory. It was also San Pedro's second win over the Sea Kings in a four-day span, also posting a 9-0 win over their Hill neighbors in the Downey Tournament this past Saturday.

Palos Verdes would take a 1-0 lead early in the top of the first inning when sophomore shortstop Kasey Halleen's ground ball triggered an error from San Pedro junior third baseman Jocelyn Kondash as her throw pulled senior first baseman Michelle Duarte off the bag, allowing junior P/OF Raylauni Jones to score with one out. Rivera was able to nullify any further damage by promptly forcing two pop outs.

From there, San Pedro (3-1 overall) would take control... literally.

Two hits from sophomore left fielder Taylor Richter and sophomore second baseman Johnie Cortez, with a walk by junior center fielder Doreen Corella sandwiched in between the hits quickly loaded the bases, and then Rivera stroked a double over Palos Verdes junior center fielder Sami Silvestri's head, allowing Richter and Corella to score, putting San Pedro ahead to stay.

Junior shortstop Angelina Boskovich's two-RBI triple with one out just landed fair down the right field line would increase the lead to 4-1, and then it was an avalanche of hits and runs.

Junior catcher Armida Salceda Roman stroked an RBI-double to left field, Kondash's bloop RBI-single, Corella's RBI-single, a fielder's choice from Cortez, another two-RBI single from Rivera and an RBI-single from sophomore OF/C Alexa Ponce would round out the Pirates' incredible 11-run, 11-hit first inning onslaught.

In the second inning, the Pirates would pile on one more run with Corella's two-out RBI-single.

Richter would go 2-for-4 with two runs scored, Corella went 2-for-3 with 2 RBIs and a run scored, Rivera would go 2-for-5 with 4 RBIs, Ponce went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored, while Boskovich went 2-for-3 with 2 RBIs and a run scored to power the Pirates, who have won five in a row against Palos Verdes since their first meeting back in 2005 at San Pedro High.

Rivera and Kondash would combine to limit the Sea Kings (3-2) to three hits and two runs, with Rivera (2-1) starting off the game hurling four innings for the win, striking out two with two walks. In three innings, Kondash didn't surrender a hit or run, striking out four with two walks.

San Pedro will next face Downey in the semifinals of the Downey Tournament on Saturday and won't have another home game until April 17 against Narbonne of Harbor City.
