SOUTH GATE - The San Pedro High softball team stepped up in their two Downey Tournament pool play games with a pair of victories over Valley Christian of Cerritos and Palos Verdes at South Gate Park.
First in their 6-2 win over Valley Christian, junior outfielder Doreen Corella went 4-for-4 with a pair of doubles and an RBI while sophomore outfielder Taylor Richter belted a solo home run. Junior infielder Angelina Boskovich and senior first baseman Michelle Duarte added doubles for the Pirates (2-1), and junior pitcher Jocelyn Kondash scattered two runs off six hits to pick up her first career victory.
San Pedro then knocked off Palos Verdes, 9-0 in their second pool play game as junior pitcher Jaclyn Rivera hurled a four-hit shutout. Rivera, sophomore outfielder Alexa Ponce and sophomore infielder Johnie Cortez all stroked doubles against the Sea Kings.
Next up for the Pirates is yet another duel with Palos Verdes in their home opener on Wednesday.
