A little over a year ago, the San Pedro High softball team was the host of one of the most incredible power displays ever when Carson hit six home runs, two of which went into the Pirate Stadium football bleachers in a 17-5 Colts victory.
This year, San Pedro made it a point to not allow it to happen again.
Amazingly, the host Pirates didn't give up a home run to Carson this time, and it still wasn't enough to save them from their own offensive struggles with runners in scoring position as the Colts won, 5-1 to clinch a share of the Marine League championship. Despite the valiant effort, the Pirates (17-12 overall, 5-4 league) left 11 on base, including the bases loaded in the fourth and seventh innings.
In the bottom of the second inning, San Pedro took a 1-0 lead when junior P/3B Jocelyn Kondash blasted a double off the left field fence to drive in junior shortstop Angelina Boskovich, who led off the inning with a double. Kondash also pitched well, limiting Carson (19-6, 8-1) to two hits in the first three innings until the Colts finally solved her in the fourth by loading the bases with nobody out.
Kondash was able to get senior first baseman Viri Ramos to pop out, but then sophomore catcher Hilary Edior smashed a two-run single right by Boskovich to put Carson ahead to stay. San Pedro would also load the bases in the bottom of the fourth but failed to score after sophomore second baseman Johnie Cortez flied out to center field.
Carson would then score three more runs in the top of the sixth to pull away on an RBI-single by senior left fielder Jolynn Finlay and a two-run single by sophomore shortstop Brianna Tautalafua, who went 3-for-4 on the day. The Colts were able to pound out 11 hits off Kondash and junior relief pitcher Jaclyn Rivera, and also drew five walks. Finlay went 2-for-4 with an RBI, and Edior went 2-for-4 with a double and 2 RBIs.
Boskovich went 2-for-3 with a run scored for San Pedro, while Kondash went 2-for-2 with a double and an RBI.
Sophomore right fielder Cayla Ezelle turned a 9-3 double play in the fifth inning for San Pedro to take advantage of a Carson base-running blunder, and junior left fielder Doreen Corella made a dazzling play in the second inning, throwing out senior designated player Jessica Gonzalez at second as she tried to stretch her single into a double.
The Pirates did everything they could... just didn't get the desired result they were looking for.
San Pedro can actually help the Colts get the Marine League title outright in Wednesday's season finale if it can defeat Banning of Wilmington at San Pedro High. The Pilots (24-4, 8-1) edged Narbonne, 2-1 on Monday.

It was still a great game. I hope & pray the Carson Outfielder who ran into the fence is ok.
