The 2015-2016 seasons for the San Pedro, Mary Star Of The Sea and Port Of Los Angeles High boys basketball teams in San Pedro Prep Sports, saw some amazing moments, and all three teams reach their respective CIF Sectional playoffs.
It also saw the making of a new Star, no pun intended, on the rise.
Mary Star High boys basketball freshman guard Joseph Octave made an impact his first night of his high school career against POLA on November 23, 2015, as he scored a game-high 24 points to go along with 5 rebounds, 5 assists and 4 steals in pacing the Stars to an 84-50 victory. In his third game against Shalhevet of Los Angeles in the Milken Tournament, Octave would score 30 points in a crucial 61-57 win for the Stars.
Later on, Octave, along with a veteran starting lineup that included senior center Justin Rodriguez and a trio of juniors in Nick Billings, Noah Prince and Nathan Linayao, would anchor a Mary Star team coached by Marc Vuoso that finished 17-10 overall, placing third in the Santa Fe League at 6-4, and reaching the CIF-Southern Section Division 4A playoffs once again.
For those reasons alone, Octave is the 2016 San Pedro News Pilot Prep Boys Basketball Player Of The Year, and Vuoso is the Coach Of The Year.
Octave is a great combo guard who can play a variety of positions, as he averaged 18.9 points for Mary Star. He along with Rodriguez made the All-Santa Fe League first team, while Prince and Billings made second team. Mary Star started off the year winning seven of their first eight games.
San Pedro senior guard Danny Guerrero is the Most Outstanding Player after leading the Pirates in scoring, and was the most deadliest shooter from three-point range. San Pedro would go 13-15 overall and reach the CIF-Los Angeles City Section Division 1 playoffs after placing fourth in the Marine League at 5-7. San Pedro also reached the finals of the Huntington Park Tournament Orange Division, and in that final against Cleveland, Guerrero scored 28 points.
Two of San Pedro's league victories against Banning on January 13 and Gardena on February 10 occurred in overtime, while the 53-50 victory over the Panthers was a double overtime triumph.
Sophomore guard Cole Turner made the biggest highlight in the San Pedro Pirate Shootout Tournament on December 26 against South Tahoe, where he literally made his defender fall back five yards on the court with a sick crossover dribble before stopping and hitting a three-pointer during the Pirates' 73-69 victory.
POLA made a return to the CIF-Los Angeles City Section Division 4 playoffs under first-year coach Leo Turrat, as the Polar Bears finished 10-13 overall, and third in the Crosstown League at 6-6. The Polar Bears had four All-Crosstown League selections in junior guard Isaac Perez and senior forward Damian Florez on first team, along with senior guard Andrew Walker and senior forward Paul Delgado on second team.
On February 8, the Polar Bears won a classic 61-60 thriller against rival Harbor Teacher Prep.
