The 2016 All-San Pedro News Pilot Prep Girls Soccer Team

The 2015-2016 girls soccer seasons for San Pedro, Port Of Los Angeles and Mary Star Of The Sea were all fruitful as for the second straight year, they all won their respective league championships in the same year.

For San Pedro, it was a magical run to say the least.

Crystal Valdes and Chatelaine 'Shadow' Ansaldi, a mother-daughter tandem, took over as the coaches for San Pedro, and the Pirates took off with an incredible year, finishing 20-3-2 overall, dominating the Marine League for their eleventh straight league title, outscoring league foes 55-1, winning their own Lady Pirate Cup Tournament for the first time, and reaching the CIF-Los Angeles City Section Division 1 semifinals, where it lost to eventual champion Taft.

Valdes and Ansaldi are the 2016 San Pedro News Pilot Prep Girls Soccer Coaches Of The Year for their combined efforts in making the Pirates a powerhouse once again.

Two players in particular made the season fun.

San Pedro junior forward Ryann Lozano and POLA sophomore forward Briana Mancilla were truly remarkable in how they led their respective teams in a variety of ways, not to mention their amazing scoring exploits. Lozano was just uncontainable with four league hat tricks and scoring 28 goals as the top goal scorer for all CIF-LACS D-1 teams.

Mancilla established herself as a premier all-around prep soccer talents at POLA, as she was third in the entire CIF-LACS with 31 goals, and second in the CIF-LACS with 26 assists in powering the Polar Bears to a 22-4-4 record, a sixth straight Crosstown League title at 10-0-2, and a second straight berth in the Division 4 finals, where it fell in heartbreaking fashion to Northridge Academy on a penalty kick shootout.

In that title tilt, Mancilla was unstoppable in defeat, creating tons of scoring opportunities with her cunning and quickness, while also scoring on POLA's only made penalty kick in the shootout.

Lozano and Mancilla share the 2016 San Pedro News Pilot Prep Girls Soccer Player Of The Year honors.

Overall, POLA and coach Javier Torres overcame injuries to the likes of junior forward Anna Vidovich, sophomore midfielder Christy Messner and senior midfielder Maddi Pepper during the first month of the season to tie a school record for victories in the season, as the Polar Bears were injected with some new talent such as freshmen Giselle Mora, Amber Lopez and Kendall Dimson.

Four-year senior Daisy Garcia was stellar at goalie as well and was a great tag team partner with fellow senior Emily Haugen.

Despite missing part of the league season and the first three games of the year due to injury, San Pedro sophomore goalie Carlene Luna retains her Goalie Of The Year honor as she made some spectacular saves throughout the year with eight shutouts, none bigger than when San Pedro won 1-0 at Palisades in the CIF-LACS Division 1 quarterfinals.

Mary Star and coach Shain Rossi finished 11-8 overall, and 7-1 in the Santa Fe League, repeating as champions with a flair for the dramatic in winning one-goal games against the likes of St. Mary's Academy, St. Bernard of Playa Del Rey and Serra of Gardena all on the road.

Heroes such as freshman midfielder Rose Amalfitano and senior striker Karina Amezcua shined in the clutch during those victories, and junior goalie Taylor Garcia was named the league's Most Valuable Goalkeeper.

What a year it was for girls soccer in San Pedro.
