Third Time's A Charm For SPHS Softball As They Stun ECR

WOODLAND HILLS - It wasn't going to happen three years in a row.

San Pedro High softball had suffered two straight painful eliminations by El Camino Real of Woodland Hills in the CIF-Los Angeles City Section Division I playoffs. Two years ago, a walk-off double ousted the Pirates, 2-1 in an eight-inning semifinal setback. Last year, a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the seventh downed San Pedro yet again in a 2-1 quarterfinal defeat.

New season, same battle but on the third try... a much desired result.

On what many people call 'Throwback Thursday', the visiting Pirates provided another clutch performance in dethroning the defending City Section champion Conquistadors, 6-2 in a Division I quarterfinal that avenged both those hard-to-swallow defeats.

With two straight road wins in the playoffs, tenth-seeded San Pedro (19-13 overall) will try to go for a third, and gain more revenge in the process as they head to Tuesday's semifinals at third-seeded Carson, a longtime Marine League nemesis that has beaten the Pirates in both regular season meetings. Second-seeded El Camino Real ended its season at 21-7.

Sophomore outfielder Cayla Ezelle banged two triples and scored twice for San Pedro, who got a critical solo home run in the top of the sixth inning from junior catcher Armida Salceda Roman that would deflate the Conquistadors.

Junior pitcher Jaclyn Rivera scattered nine hits and had two strikeouts and two walks for San Pedro, while also going 2-for-4 at the plate with 2 RBIs. Junior shortstop Angelina Boskovich went 2-for-4 with 2 RBIs as well, scoring twice for the Pirates in their victory over El Camino Real.

Both San Pedro and El Camino Real have combined to win 30 CIF-Los Angeles City Section softball titles, with San Pedro winning 16 crowns.
