The scenario could not have been set any better for Ronnie Galosic on Wednesday, May 19, 2010 at the San Pedro High baseball field.
To say that 'the deuces were wild' would be a complete understatement considering the situation Galosic was facing was the count of two balls and two strikes with two runners on base, and the Pirates trailing visiting San Fernando by two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning with their season nearly coming to a disappointing conclusion.
San Pedro was in desperate need of a miracle, and it came in the form of a curveball down the middle.
Galosic would put the perfect swing on the pitch and it carried all the way over the left field fence, elevating the Pirates to a dramatic 10-9 victory over the stunned Tigers in this CIF-Los Angeles City Section Division I first round playoff game which would eventually propel San Pedro to a marvelous run to the championship game, where it fell short in a 9-8 loss to El Camino Real of Woodland Hills at Dodger Stadium.
"I knew it right away, it felt perfect off the bat," Galosic said of his three-run walk-off home run. "I watched it, then I started yelling."
Galosic's entire family was right there watching it with him, and as he rounded home plate it was a total mob scene, a fitting celebration to an incredible gutsy effort for San Pedro, who rallied from a 6-1 deficit to force extra innings and then the 9-7 deficit in the ninth that was wiped out by Galosic's mighty blow.
In the ninth inning, David Carrillo would lace a lead-off single to left field, then designated hitter Nathan Etheridge walked on four pitches one out later. After the next Pirate batter was retired, in came Galosic, who would then blast his way into the annals of San Pedro High School's greatest sports clutch performers.
Galosic went 3-for-5 on the day with four RBIs and three runs scored.
Danny Matienzo also homered in the fourth inning for San Pedro, but he had two shocking blunders that almost aided San Fernando.
In the bottom of the eighth inning, the Pirates loaded the bases, but Matienzo hit a line drive to center field that would likely score Anthony Canjura. Yet, San Fernando center fielder Erik Guerrero made the catch then threw to second base on a line to double up San Pedro's Jacob Johnson for an inning-ending double play, wiping out the potential run.
Then in the top of ninth inning, Matienzo lost the ball on a pitch-out attempt as it rolled into the backstop, and it led to a run for San Fernando, who then added a second run three pitches later.
Yet, the Pirates managed to survive thanks to Galosic's heroics.
San Pedro pitcher Armando Martinez earned the victory by pitching the last 2 1/3 innings of relief after starting pitcher Jonathan Mata gave up six runs in 4 2/3 innings.
After this amazing victory, San Pedro would then eliminate Arleta and Chatsworth before finally falling to El Camino Real in the championship game.
