It seemed destined for the San Pedro and Narbonne High of Harbor City football teams to play for the CIF-Los Angeles City Section championship.
The aftermath of what took place Saturday, December 13, 2008 at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum is still talked about to this day, and will hardly be forgotten for a long time to come.
San Pedro and Narbonne were truly the best the City had to offer in 2008, and they proved it the first time they played each other on October 24 where Narbonne edged San Pedro, 27-24 in a triple-overtime classic that eventually determined the outright Marine League title.
In a rivalry that seems to come down to the final play, from Melvin Yarbrough’s five-yard pressure-packed touchdown fling to Jose Bojorquez with no time left that led San Pedro to a 16-14 win during their undefeated 1996 City Section championship season, to Narbonne quarterback Josh Moten’s 10-yard screen pass to tailback Thomas Gray for the winning score that ended the league battle nearly two months ago, the 2008 City title had to come down to the final play once again.
This time, it would be San Pedro’s turn to provide the flair for the dramatic.
Down 21-14 with 27 seconds left, quarterback Barry Heads passed his way into the annals of this simmering rivalry, completing four straight passes for 55 yards without the benefit of a timeout, the last one was a 15-yard touchdown pass to tight end Benny Weischedel with no time remaining in the game, and Donald Jarrin’s third successful PAT kick made it official...
Two teams both staking the claim to a City Section football championship.
Due to the rules of the City Section that doesn't allow the California tie-breaking overtime procedure in a championship game (the OT procedure was then put in place months later), San Pedro and Narbonne ended the City Section championship game with unfinished business, a 21-21 tie that gave both teams a share of the title, San Pedro’s third major championship (fifth title overall), and Narbonne’s first.
“I don’t know if this was really a tie,” said San Pedro coach Mike Walsh, who said later he had no doubts about going for the extra point instead if going for the win on a two-point conversion. “I think both teams won a City title today, and I guess these teams can’t separate from each other, considering the first game went to three overtimes.”
The end result didn't seem to bother the Pirates at all, as they were the ones celebrating an achievement nobody outside of San Pedro expected, much less predicted. Both quarterbacks were excellent, as Heads completed 9-of-15 passes for 134 yards and two touchdowns for San Pedro, while Moten completed 15-of-22 passes for 134 yards, a touchdown and an interception for the Gauchos, who like San Pedro, finished with identical 12-1-1 overall records.
Narbonne appeared to have the title won outright when defensive end Davon Wallace sacked Heads on a fourth-and-seven play from Narbonne’s 17-yard line with a little over two minutes remaining in the game, but the Gauchos failed to run out the clock fast enough and were forced to punt. Then Narbonne's Timothy Tucker slightly bumped into punt returner Cristian Farrow, giving San Pedro a 15-yard head start, and Heads another chance.
Starting from San Pedro’s 45-yard line, Heads first completed a pass to senior RB/LB Robert Franco for eight yards, then hooked up with Tim Mills for an ten-yard gain. After spiking the ball to stop the clock with ten seconds left, Heads found Weischedel for a 22-yard gain then quickly spiked the ball again with one second to go.
On the final play, Heads somehow avoided a sack, got a key block from Franco, and fired a mini Hail-Mary to Weischedel in the back-left corner of the end zone in between two Gaucho defenders as the final second ticked off the clock, setting off a wild celebration for the 10,000-plus Black & Gold clad fans, along with the Gold Fever student section.
“I didn't really think too much,” Weischedel said on the final play. “Barry threw the ball in the perfect spot, and all I had to do was look the ball in and catch it. It was amazing for us to comeback the way we did.”
Behind running back Melvin Davis, Narbonne took a 21-7 lead into the fourth quarter, as he ran in a five-yard touchdown run with 2:20 remaining in the second quarter for a 6-0 halftime lead.
Then after Joseph Deguchi’s 17-yard run following a fumble recovery from Alonzo Lefridge gave San Pedro a 7-6 lead early in the third quarter, Davis’ one-yard touchdown run followed by his two-point conversion run, followed by his 17-yard scoring reception off a fourth-down pass from Moten with a lost San Pedro fumble sandwiched in between those two scores, gave the Gauchos the two-touchdown edge.
However, San Pedro’s defense, which has been a trademark all of the 2008 season, came up big as Corey Hughes read Moten’s slant pass, picked it off at the San Pedro seven-yard line and returned it 72 yards to Narbonne’s 21, and two plays later, Heads found Weischedel wide open for a 20-yard touchdown with 8:35 remaining in the fourth quarter.
“I knew (Moten) was running a slant pattern,” Hughes said. “I simply cut in front of (Narbonne’s Byron Moore) to pick it, and nearly took it to the house.”
And then came the ending, leaving both teams wondering what might have been if overtime was allowed.
Deguchi led San Pedro with 80 yards rushing on 22 carries.
“It feels good to come out of here as champions,” said Franco, the lone remaining member of the 2006 City Section runner-up team. “Give credit to Narbonne for the way they played, but we sure wanted it.”
