A couple years ago, my friend Russ Havens (brother of my friend Ken that was KIA Vietnam) was contacted by a movie production company who was beginning a film project about the Vietnam War. It would be done in high definition (HD). They had seen Ken’s Vietnam movies on Russ's YouTube Channel, Ken Havens in Vietnam Part 1 and Ken Havens in Vietnam Part 2, and asked if they could borrow the original films. Their hope was to use as many actual original movies as possible, taken by the actual service men and women who were there. The film company wanted the original movie film, rather than any kind of copy because they wanted to restore the film first before selecting clips from all those received. Bob (Ken and Russ’ younger brother) found the original movies, and sent them off.
Well, it has been released and was broadcast on the History Channel this week over a three night period: Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday (Nov. 8, 9 and 10) at 6 PM. It is airing again tonight 11/11/11 on the History Channel 2 and will run the next three nights. That's Channel 271 for those on DirectTV.
We finally made the big show. This is a 5 segment series and appears as three two hour segments. I actually made it into the last segment titled “The Changing War” at the 1:28 hour mark (three or four clips, one with shaving cream all over my face). See if you can spot me at 19 years old.
This will be quite a Veterans’ Day for us, which by the way is, 11-11-11. Can’t think of a more significant way to honor the day than to watch this series and simply remember our loved ones and hold those close who are with us still.
