All three of San Pedro's most decorated and established prep softball players just received one final, yet highly recognized postseason honor.
Cal-Hi Sports, the state's most famous high school sports source, recognized Mary Star High's Marina Vitalich, and the Port Of Los Angeles High duo of Nicolle Miranda and Allison Bayer to their 2013 All-State Underclass Team.
Vitalich and Miranda were both named to the first team as multi-purpose players for their outstanding hitting and pitching, while Bayer made the All-State Underclass second team.
This amazing honor for all three fine young athletes should come as no surprise to this close-knit community, considering Vitalich is a two-time News Pilot Player Of The Year (Pitcher Of The Year in 2013), while Miranda and Bayer are the 2013 News Pilot Co-Players Of The Year. All three took their respective schools to a CIF championship game.
Behind the amazing Vitalich, combined with several contributions from a dynamite infield and her impeccable chemistry with catcher Amber Nunez, the Stars reached the CIF-Southern Section Division 6 championship game. Vitalich, the two-time Camino Real League Player & Pitcher Of The Year who will be a junior in 2014, went 20-9 in the circle with a 1.64 ERA with 249 strikeouts, while also hitting .368 with three home runs and 14 RBIs.
Miranda and Bayer were the two most dangerous on a team filled with dangerous hitters that proved to be too good for the Small Schools Division for the CIF-Los Angeles City Section, as the Polar Bears steamrolled to their third straight CIF-LACS Division 3 title.
Also a lethal pitcher, Miranda, the two-time CIF-LACS Division 3 Pitcher Of The Year, who will also be a junior next season, piled up a 20-8 record with a 1.88 ERA and 205 strikeouts, while also hitting .442 with seven homers and 36 RBIs. Bayer on the other hand had the most prolific hitting season of anyone, hitting .445 with 11 home runs and 49 RBIs, while also banging 14 doubles.
Bayer, who will be a senior next season, is also the 2013 CIF-LACS Division 3 Player Of The Year and will be going for an unprecedented fourth straight City title.
These three Cal-Hi Sports All-State Underclass selections are the first from San Pedro to be honored since former Pirate slugging sensation Kailee Cuico (now at Oregon) in 2010.
