The 2015 All-San Pedro News Pilot Prep Boys Basketball Team

The 2014-2015 seasons for the San Pedro, Mary Star Of The Sea and Port Of Los Angeles High boys basketball teams in San Pedro Prep Sports, all ended with a losing record, but one of them, Mary Star, was able to extend their season into the playoffs.

Needing a win on their final regular season game to get playoff eligible, the Stars fed off their home crowd and rallied from a nine-point deficit to win 52-47 over St. Paul of Santa Fe Springs on February 11, and lo and behold, Mary Star got the magic tenth win for them to be eligible to petition for an at-large bid in the CIF-Southern Section Division V-A playoffs.

The Stars would then take full advantage, knocking out Le Lycee of Los Angeles, then fourth-seeded Santa Clarita Christian before finally succumbing to eventual Division V-A champion St. Bernard of Playa Del Rey.

Two players in particular, senior forward Neil Green and junior F/C Justin Rodriguez were the main catalysts. Whether it be Green knocking down outside shots, or Rodriguez terrorizing the opposition down low on both ends of the court, it was truly remarkable to be seen when they both clicked. Since they both functioned so well, they both get our nod for the 2015 San Pedro News Pilot Boys Basketball Co-Players Of The Year.

Mary Star went 12-17 overall in 2015, but they were the only team in 2014-2015 that made the playoffs with a 3-5 record in the Santa Fe League, while San Pedro suffered from losing 11 seniors from last year's team, going 10-19 overall, 2-10 in the Marine League(sixth place), with the lone two victories coming against last place Banning of Wilmington. Port Of Los Angeles went 7-17 overall, 4-8 in the Crosstown League, good for fifth place.
